Now that you closed on your property, here are some moving tips can be used to ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

  • # 1 MOVING TIP: Start Early
  • Be organized. Especially when packing your important documents and valuable items. Know where they are.
  • Coordinate with your Seller about when the Utility Bills will be switched over. It may be cheaper for you to have the accounts transferred into your name rather than setting up a new account.

Before the Move:

  • Inventory all of the items you want to move.
  • Garage Sale: Time to get rid of the stuff you haven't used for years.
  • Get estimates from moving companies.
  • See if your new employer will cover any moving expenses (if work-related relocation)

Four Weeks:

  • Give notice to current landlord (for tenants).
  • Put valuables in a safe deposit box.
  • Get records of: prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays, children's medical & school records, pet's immunizations (for cross-country move).
  • Change of address notice to: post office, friends, family, banks, retirement accounts, magazines, credit cards, insurance companies (auto, health & home).
  • Ask current medical professionals for possible referrals.
  • Give notice of cancellation to: newspaper & utility companies.
  • Drain gas, oil, propane from lawn mover, bar-b-que, etc.

One week before moving:

  • Close current bank accounts, locate new bank and order checks
  • Empty freezer.
  • Separate personal / family items for travel from items for the movers.
  • Plan for special needs of pets / children.
  • Remove valuables from safe deposit box.
  • Call for utilities to be turned on in your name a couple of days prior to your move-in date.

Moving Day:

  • Be at the house the entire time the movers are there.
  • Double check with moving company on delivery address and date.
  • Carry valuables (jewelry and documents) personally.
  • Make a final tour of your residence to make sure nothing is left behind. Open all cabinets and drawers.
  • Disconnect all utilities.
  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Leave old keys with appropriate person.

When you arrive:

  • Check on service of utilities (telephone, gas, electric, water, cable, trash removal).
  • Check pilot lights on stove, hot water and furnace.
  • Change your drivers license.
  • Register your vehicles (for out-of-state move).
  • Register children in school.
  • Arrange for new medical professionals.
  • Obtain phone numbers for emergencies.
